Alaska update and World War II book discount

We continue to savor our September in Alaska. We've enjoyed an array of weather, but still some nice days to sit out on the deck and revel in the amazing scenery and wildlife. We watched two enormous pieces of ice calve off of the face of the beautiful Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay. They were each about 15 stories tall. Wowza! Did you know Glacier Bay is 3.3 million acres and includes more than 1,000 glaciers? Only seven of those are tidewater glaciers like Margerie, glaciers that reach all the way to the water. This is a very special and unique place and we are so fortunate to get the chance to experience it three times this month.

Invaded: Alaska in World War II

One of the stories from our History Highlights Series that we share onboard the Alaska cruises is the topic of the book we are featuring this week. We find that many Americans are not even aware that during World War II the Japanese invaded Alaska and held two islands for about a year. It's a little-known part of American history.

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Invaded: Alaska in World War II" unveils the riveting and little-known saga of Alaska's pivotal role in World War II. Delving deep into the heart of the Last Frontier's wartime experience, this book paints a vivid portrait of courage, resilience, and sacrifice amidst the chilling backdrop of conflict.

From the monumental undertaking of constructing the ALASKA CANADA HIGHWAY (an incredible feat of engineering that linked the lower 48 U.S. states through Canada's vast wilderness to Alaska), to the harrowing events of the 1942 JAPANESE INVASION of Alaska's Aleutian Islands that sent shockwaves through the region, every page resonates with the pulse-pounding drama of history in the making.

But "Invaded" isn't just a chronicle of battles and strategic maneuvers—it's a poignant exploration of the human spirit. Through compelling accounts of the internment of some Alaskan Natives and the enlistment of others into military service in the Alaska Territorial Guard, the book shines a light on the often-overlooked sacrifices and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. As the narrative unfolds, readers are swept into the relentless struggle of the ALEUTIAN CAMPAIGN, where Allied forces fought through brutal conditions to liberate the Japanese-held islands of Attu and Kiska, forging a legacy of bravery that echoes through the ages.

With meticulous research and gripping storytelling, "Invaded" is a must-read for anyone seeking to uncover the remarkable saga of Alaska's role in World War II. From the frozen tundra to the windswept islands, this is a journey through history that will leave readers spellbound until the very last page.

We are savoring our time here in Alaska. The weather has been cool and a little wet, but comfortable and peaceful. In the same way that Mark Twain emerged as the "voice" of the Mississippi River, or Thoreau for Walden Pond, famed naturalist John Muir wrote beautifully about Alaska. He visited the region seven times in the last 20 years of the 1800s. His writings sparked a fervor for visitation and preservation of this wilderness. No one captured it better than Muir.
